Here are 5 top tips for making the most of your engagement photoshoot in locations such as Durham, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Gateshead, Bishop Auckland, Northumberland, Hartlepool and around the Northeast.
1. Choose a location that's meaningful to you
The North East of England is full of beautiful locations for engagement photoshoots, so why not choose a spot that has special meaning for you and your partner? Whether it's a favorite park, a historic landmark, or a scenic beach, picking a location that's personal to you can help you feel more comfortable and relaxed during the shoot.
Some popular spots for engagement photoshoots in the North East of England include the iconic Angel of the North in Gateshead, the picturesque Durham Cathedral, and the stunning Northumberland coastline.
2. Dress appropriately for the weather
The weather in the North East of England can be unpredictable, so be sure to dress appropriately for the conditions on the day of your shoot. If you're planning a shoot in the winter months, bring along warm jackets and hats, while summer shoots may call for lighter, more breathable clothing.
3. Coordinate your outfits
While you don't need to match perfectly, it's a good idea to coordinate your outfits with your partner's for a cohesive look in your photos. Stick to a color palette or theme that complements the location and the season.
4. Hire a professional photographer
Investing in a professional photographer for your engagement photoshoot can make a world of difference in the final product. Look for a photographer who has experience shooting in the North East of England and can offer recommendations for the best locations and lighting conditions.
5. Have fun!
Finally, remember that your engagement photoshoot should be a fun and enjoyable experience! Try not to stress too much about getting the perfect shot – your photographer will be able to guide you and capture some beautiful moments between you and your partner.
An engagement photoshoot in the North East of England can be a wonderful way to celebrate your love and capture some stunning images of you and your partner. By following these tips and choosing the right location and photographer, you can create memories that will last a lifetime.

Due to ever changing COVID-19 situation, tier restrictions and multiple lockdowns, Demi and Stephen had to reschedule their wedding at the Newcastle Civic Centre until the second lockdown ended on the 3rd December 2020.
The day was 3 degrees, dull, grey and very wet but that didn’t have any impact the mood. Demi from China wore a beautiful traditional Chinese dress which look spectacular. The photography backlighting made use of rain drops which created natural glitter in the air whilst the use of lighting gels helped to punch colour into the greyest of days.
Here are a few of the images from Demi & Stephens special day at the Newcastle Upon Tyne Civic Centre. If your looking for a Newcastle wedding photographer please get in touch..

Such a fantastic choice of North East wedding venue. Matfen Hall is set in 300 acres of beautiful Northumbrian Countryside and is such a unique and historic venue that is only 17 miles from Newcastle city centre.
Rachel & Andrew
Wedding at Matfen Hall, Newcastle Upon Tyne
This was to be a very special wedding for a very special couple who were High School Sweethearts.
Rachel & Andrew made such a fantastic choice when choosing which North East wedding venue to hold their wedding at. Matfen Hall is set in 300 acres of beautiful Northumbrian Countryside and is such a unique and historic venue that is only 17 miles from Newcastle city centre.
At Matfen in the great hall there is a spectacular bridal entrance with a large spectacular Oak sweeping staircase that brought Rachel and her father as they made their way down to the wedding ceremony that was positioned right in front of the grand open fireplace where Andrew was waiting for his Bride.
After the ceremony the we shoot the groups in front of the fire place inside Matfen Hall. This was a good idea and allowed us a more relaxed environment to gather groups as it was raining off and on throughout the day
The day was fantastic and the wedding party took full advantage of the rest of the venue using The Cloister courtyard with its Fire Pit and The Vault Bar. Matfen Hall is truly an unforgettable romantic setting for a wedding.

Charlton Hall Wedding
Tied the knot at Charlton Hall
Penny & Matt tied the knot on New Year’s Eve surrounded by the sunning Northumbrian countryside at their North East wedding venue, Charlton Hall in Chathill.
Penny & Matt
NYE Wedding at Charlton Hall, Northumberland
“10/10! We couldn’t have asked for more! Elliot and Veronica were the perfect choice; their passion and pure talent make them a duo that we think unbeatable! We’d pick them a 1000 times over! We can’t thank you enough for capturing all the special moments on our big day!”
This was to be my first time photographing a wedding on the 31st December. I’ve always booked my diary off over the festive holidays and it was time for a change. Meeting Penny & Matt who were planning their wedding day at Charlton Hall on NYE, I’m so happy to have be able to photograph this New Year’s Eve double celebration and now can’t wait to take on more NYE bookings in the future.
Winter weddings can be very challenging with the extreme weather, the low temperatures and lack of natural light. We were lucky and had the most perfect day with clear blue skies and lots of sunshine for Penny & Matt’s wedding. The only difficulty we found was with camera battery life with subzero temperatures as we had 2 hours long exposure for the star-trail portrait and fireworks. I think Veronica really felt it as she was out in the middle of a pitch black frozen field alone for 25 mins waiting to capture the fireworks at the turn of 2020. Feeling very guilty - I stayed in the warmth photographing the wedding party in Charlton Hall’s ‘The Looking Glass’ reception room - BIG love & respect to my wife Veronica for doing that for me as I know her mediterranean blood needs a lot heat.
This wedding venue is perfect! A wedding photographers dream. It’s just my style - fun & quirky with loads of photo ops both in an outdoors. Charlton Hall is a dog-friendly wedding venue which was perfect for Penny & Matt at their brought along their 2 dogs as ring bearers.

It’s has to be one of the best venues in the North East as it’s a wedding photographers dream because it’s a quirky venue that’s surrounded by the stunning Northumberland countryside.
Holly & Mark
Autumn wedding at Woodhill Hall, Otterburn
When we first met Holly, Mark and their dog Harley during their engagement photoshoot at Bolam Lake. I knew straight away that their wedding day was going to be a very enjoyable wedding to photograph.
Both Holly & Mark did an amazing job to reflect their personalities, during the day. Their fun and quirkiness was the perfect fit for their venue. Woodhill Hall, located in Otterburn, Northumberland, which has to be one of my favourite venues to photograph. In my opinion, it’s one of the best venues in the North East as it’s a wedding photographers dream as it’s surrounded by the stunning Northumbrian countryside, has cool décor and is a very quirky wedding venue that offers diverse areas and locations to take advantage of, from tiny secret neon light bars to a huge triple Tipi.
This was to be an autumnal wedding, full of colour & laughter; and one we will not forget.

Thank you so much for flexibility and patience over the weekend.
We absolutely adore the pictures and cant wait to share them with family and friends :)
Wishing there was more than 5 stars that we could give, haha :)”
Sarah & Krishna
Hindu & Civil ceremonies @ Heythorpe Park, Oxfordshire
After meeting Sarah & Krishna’s for their engagement session at Lickey Hills in Birmingham, we couldn’t wait to shoot their two day wedding at the Heythorpe Park Resort in Enstone in Oxfordshire six weeks later.
We’re so very happy that this couple came across us through Fearless Photographer website. I consider myself very lucky and privileged that they chose me as there’s so many talented photographers on Fearless.
This was a Sri Lankan Hindu Tamil wedding celebration and a civil ceremony that we were documenting over two days. The celebrations started for them and their families many days before - I don’t know where they get the stamina from. First was the Hindu ceremony and reception party in the Ballroom followed the next day by a much calmer and quieter Civil wedding ceremony in the Orangery at the resort .
Thankfully we decided to stay at the resort as well which worked out great as on the first wedding day, we starting with a cleansing ceremony with the groom and his family at 7am. Poor Krishna, having ice cold liquids poured on him at that time in the morning would have woke anyone up - forget coffee. I’ve never witnessed this type of ceremony before and this why I love my job so much. I get to see so many different traditions and cultures on an exceptionally happy and fun day.
The day was a blast and with so much love, colour, noise and happiness. I’ll never forget the amount of care and attention Sarah and Krishna’s families took to look after us throughout the day - it was overwhelming. Thank you all for your kindness and warmth.
I have to mention some other people for all their hard effort that made event so amazing and a pleasure to work alongside.

North East Wedding Photographers
5 Top tips for finding a photographer
My essential tips to finding your perfect wedding photographer in the North East of England.
The best guide to help you choose your perfect wedding photographer in the North East of England.
North East weddings are wonderful, beautiful, joyous events especially surrounded by some of the most breathtaking coastline & countryside in the United Kingdom.
As you know, or are soon to learn, weddings can also be sometimes stressful. You’ve (probably) never done this before and there are just so many options out there to choose between, decision fatigue will happen. For every aspect of your wedding there are tons of great suppliers in the Northeast from florists, caterers, seating arrangements, venues, dresses, stationery, cakes and then of course there's all the North East wedding photographers. How do you choose?
Before I start giving you my opinion, you should probably know a little about me. I’m a wedding photographer based in Newcastle Upon Tyne, but often travelling to weddings nationally within the UK and overseas in Europe. I’ve been a professional photographer for over 20 years, starting off my career as a Newspaper Photojournalist after graduating from studying photography at Art School. Many years ago I made the natural transition over to wedding photojournalism. To date I have had the pleasure and honour of photographing hundreds of weddings.
I’ve helped many friends and family members choose a photographer for their wedding (I prefer to enjoy their weddings as a guest) and in many ways the advice choosing a photographer in the North East is exactly the same as choosing a photographer in any location in the world.
So here's a little guide, by a wedding photographer, on how to choose the right wedding photographer for your wedding in the North East of England.
These are what I think are the essentials, if you get these right you will be less likely to be disappointed.
1. WHAT STYLE DO YOU LIKE?
Style is in many respects the easiest thing to get right. With the proliferation of the internet wedding photography styles have formed into a few different schools. If you've looked online, read magazines, started a Pinterest account, you will now know that you either want a photojournalist style, editorial style or traditional style.
One style should appeal to you more than another. As a very quick guide here are some of my photos to highlight the difference:
Wedding Photojournalists tend to capture moments as they happen with very little direction leaving your more time just to enjoy your day.
Editorial Wedding Photographers is usually features some directing and stylising from the photographer to the subjects in the photo.
Traditional wedding photographers provide more classically posed images with much more hands control from the photographer.
I’m more of a hybrid. I predominantly shoot in a photojournalistic style with a touch of editorial style. It's also very important to me to create unique photographs that will make your wedding unique not just a replication of every other wedding photographed recently. For example, this image of newlyweds at their wedding reception, opening a bottle of champagne together in celebration of their day.
So make sure you choose a photographer who shoots in a style you like. It should be pretty obvious from their website, but if it's not or you aren't sure you like their style, move on. There are plenty of wedding photographers in the North East to choose from so don't feel otherwise.
2. Quality of the photographer
The second, and in many ways most important, decision you need to make is about the quality of photographer you want. I'm not talking about style here (editorial, photojournalism etc), or cost, I'm talking about the quality of the photographer. How many great photos do they take across the whole day.
Here's an attempt to capture the range of possible photographers for your wedding:
# 1. Uncle Bob. He's always loved taking 'snaps'.
# 2. Jane's cousin David. He's a keen amateur who might have even studied photography once.
# 3. A "Professional wedding photographer".
# 4. A "Professional wedding photographer".
Hold on…… aren't #3 and #4 the same? Nope!!
I'd say 50-80% of "professional wedding photographers" out there are men and women who think buying an expensive camera makes them professional.
Buying a scalpel does not make you a surgeon.
Buying a website and putting a few photos on it does not make you a professional wedding photographer.
Becoming a #4 professional wedding photographer takes years of dedication learning the skills of photography. It takes commitment and passion and a constant desire to improve your art.
So how can you tell the difference between #3 and #4 professionals?
#3 will amaze you with a great website full of good images from different weddings, they may have slideshows set to music, they will be slick.
#4 will amaze you with a great website full of great images from weddings, they may have slideshows set to music, they will be slick.
Notice the difference? There's a key difference there. #3 will show you images from different weddings. #4 will show you images (especially if you ask) from ONE wedding.
That's the key difference.
A #4 photographer should be able to get good or great quality images across the whole day, not just one of two good images for the entire day.
I show wedding blogs from real weddings with many images from the day, but will always show full example of one entire wedding I have shot if asked; everything from the getting ready shots to the late night dancing. I believe this gives potential clients a realistic feel for the quality they can expect to receive across the entire day.
So, my #1 tip in choosing the right photographer for your North East wedding is insist on seeing images from one wedding.
That will give you a feel for how many good quality images you are likely to see after your wedding.
Which leads us to expectations….
3. Have realistic expectations
The first thing to know is that photographers, even true professionals with years of experience, are not superhuman, they will not get award-winning, magazine quality images of every single aspect of your day from 8am until midnight. It just doesn't happen. If you are expecting stunning images from sunrise to sunrise, you will be disappointed.
Professional wedding photographers, by which of course I mean #4 photographers, will give you consistently good images across the entire day and this is what you should be aiming for. There should definitely be some great images in there, the sort you will be proud to hang up on your wall.
There’s a duo of immensely talented and expensive Canadian wedding photographers. Both are at the top of their game, are in huge demand, they charge over US$25,000. If you paid that much money and expected every single image to be a prize-winning image, you would be really disappointed. Some images are truly magnificent, most are really good, a large number are just 'snaps'.
If you end up with 5-10 magnificent images, 50-90 or so really good photos, and the rest nice snaps, then you should be happy.
Have realistic expectations.
4. You get what you pay for
Cheap is always cheap. Repeat after me: cheap is always cheap. If you pick a photographer because they are cheap you can expect the quality of your images to plummet. This might be all you can afford/budget for but don't expect miracles and don't expect to be anything but disappointed (particularly if you hope to share the images with your kids and grandkids some day).
“GOOD WORK AIN’T CHEAP, CHEAP WORK AIN’T GOOD”
I was recently contact by a bride who said she had decided not to use me because I was out of her budget. She had received her photos from her chosen wedding photographer and she was so disappointed when she received them. She booked post wedding session with me so I could create so beautiful images of her and her groom in their wedding day clothes.
Do keep in mind though that your wedding is a once in a lifetime event (usually) and it might seem like a good idea to skimp on photography but really after the day is finished, apart from memories, all you have left is the photos. Imagine your grandchildren sitting down to look at your wedding album and seeing cheap photos. Is that worth it?
5. A recommendation from a friend
If you've seen your friends wedding photos (all of them) and like them then this might be a good way to go. However keep in mind a few things.
1) Did you see all the photos?
2) How long ago did your friend get married (has the photographer aged in energy or style)
3) Ask your friend what the worst thing about the experience with that photographer was - if they suggest irrelevant things like they didn't like the package the images came in, then that's probably fine, if the photographer missed a key photo, that's not fine.
Don't take a recommendation as proof that the photographer is everything you want for your wedding, refer back to points 1-4.
Conclusion...
Take these points as a starting point. There is way to find the right photographer for your wedding and I hope this helps in some way.

Great to see that I also made the “CUT” as they used the image above for their lead article photo.
You’ve probably cut one or two cakes in your life, but this will most likely be your first time slicing into a wedding cake. Naturally, you want this moment to be as magical as every other part of your big day, so you’ll need to have a plan and the right tools at the ready. We’ve broken down everything you need to know so that you absolutely nail your wedding cake cutting.
Here is your guide to wedding cake cutting.
Figure out your display
The first step is planning out your dessert display. Obviously, you want your wedding cake to take centre stage, but you don’t want to have it so far from the edge of the table that you and your partner really need to stretch to reach it (that probably won’t be very successful). To make sure your setup works, do a little planning to find the right placement for your cake and stage a trial run. That way you won’t run into any roadblocks on your big day.
Gather your equipment
You’ll need more than a kitchen knife to make your wedding cake cutting a success, so do a bit of shopping before your big day arrives. Here’s a rundown of all the bits and bobs you’ll need: a cake knife, a cake server, two forks, two napkins and two plates (maybe a drink, like champagne, to wash it down, too). Have these goodies set up and ready to go so that you’re not running around trying to get everything into place at the eleventh hour. P.S. the utensils are great keepsakes that you can pass down to your children, so they’re worth the investment.
Pick the perfect place to slice
You don’t want to ruin the structural integrity of your wedding cake with the first slice, so ask your baker about the best place to make the first cut. That way your confection won’t fall apart before anyone has gotten the chance to taste it. Keep in mind that you’ll want to avoid slicing into the top tier if you plan on saving it for your first anniversary
Make sure you’re photo-ready
You’ll definitely want a photo of your wedding cake cutting in your album, so make sure your photographer has the right lighting and angle for when you cut the cake. You’ll want to be able to get yourselves and your cake in the shot, so plan it all out beforehand. If you need help with the setup, here’s how it usually goes: the shorter partner should stand in the front and one person should hold the knife and the other should assist by placing their hand over top.
Plan your bite
Some couples like to go the silly route and smash cake in each other’s face, others like to be more civilised and feed each other using forks. Make sure you and your partner are on the same page so there aren’t any unwelcome surprises when the moment arrives.
Announce the event
While you’ll want your fair share of intimate moments on your special day, your wedding cake cutting probably shouldn’t be one of them. Get your emcee or a family member to announce the event loud and proud so that everyone gathers around to watch. You can also set up this sweet moment with a wedding cake cutting song.

Shivani Reddy from SLR Lounge contacted me with some exciting news that she wanted to share. SLR Lounge were launching their first ever Lighting Week, which was geared to help photographers pick up simple lighting techniques & tricks with Off-Camera flash.
Shivani wanted to reach out to us to collaborate for the group article: 7 Creative Off-Camera Flash Techniques For Wedding Photographers.
We were very honoured to receive this request and sent out an image that recently won a SLR Lounge Apex Award that they were interested in us detailing, along with a description of situation and lighting technique used for their article.
Elliot explains that the setup for this shot was very simple, however, the difficult part is coming across this style/type of hotel room. This particular room had a glass wall/window between the bedroom and bathroom making it easy to include the silhouette reflection of the groomsmen getting ready. He secured a flash to the pipe above the shower head and then took the exposure for the ambient light outside of the bathroom. He then positioned the groomsmen in front of the hotel window to catch their reflections while getting ready within the bathroom window. Make sure that if you attempt this shot to use lukewarm water in the shower as not to create steam that could fog up the windows and haze out the subjects.

Something Special, Something Blue

"Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue."
'Something old' represents continuity; 'something new' offers optimism for the future; 'something borrowed' symbolises borrowed happiness; 'something blue' stands for purity, love, and fidelity.
Blue has always been a symbol of purity.
In fact, historically, many women chose the colour blue for their wedding dress specifically for that reason. White, on the other hand, symbolised wealth. In 1840, Queen Victoria married Prince Albert, and wore a white wedding gown which became instantly fashionable with soon to be brides who copied the wealthy royals with white bridal dresses.
Julie from Bexleyheath in Kent, arrived at her wedding ceremony wearing her blue bridal dress. Her dress was one of the most elegant dresses I've ever seen. Julie was accompanied by her bridesmaids all wearing blue dresses. Groom Joe and his groomsmen also worn the colour blue with navy suits with light blue ties.
Blue happens to be my favourite colour and I loved every moment photographing Julie & Joe's wedding with all it's beautiful shades. Mother natural also joined in by producing a perfectly blue sky and a crystal clear blue sea to match their wedding colour scheme.
Here are a few of the highlights from Julie & Joe's gorgeous wedding.

Elliot has captured photos well above our expectations and his work is so much more than just capturing images of a wedding. Most of the time we didn’t even notice Elliot doing his job as he strategically places himself in positions, which allowed him to capture the natural vibes present at a wedding celebration (which is exactly what we wanted). In the end, we have amazing, unique and personalised photos which we will cherish in the years to come.

After the wedding ceremony, family & guests boarded their vintage buses, the newlyweds into their vintage Rolls Royce and they all headed to Mdina's Palazzo de Piro to continue the celebrations. Palazzo de Piro is a 17th century Palace, built within the medieval walled city. The Palazzo is nestled in the bastion walls and has some of the best views of Malta.

The sight of a horse drawn carriage trotting down a road Medieval Maltese streets is like no other. This was to be a beautiful destination wedding that was romantic, unconventional and so very very chic.
Tania & Dominic from Oxfordshire, booked me to photograph their destination wedding in Malta. The couple had planned for a classic church wedding in the centre of Rabat village and held their wedding reception in the nearby silent city of Mdina.
Tania and her bridesmaids arrived at Ta' Giezu Church by horse drawn carriage which was a beautiful sight to witness and capture. After the church ceremony had ended, the confetti showered couple, made the unconventional decision to walk through the medieval streets of Rabat & Mdina, accompanied by the procession of their wedding guests. I thought that this was a great unique idea, which made some awesome candid photos. The Xara Palace in Mdina was the location for their wedding reception party and dinner, both held on the Palace rooftop terrace. The views over Malta from the Palace's elevated position were stunning. This turned out to be one of my favourite weddings on the year.

A Review of an Unbelievable Year!
BEST OF 2017 | Northeast Wedding Photographer
One of the hardest jobs at the end of a year is to collect and create a highlight reel of a whole year's wedding season. It’s not easy that’s for sure, so many amazing moments shared with amazing people.
BEST OF 2017 | WHAT A YEAR!!
NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER
One of the hardest jobs at the end of a year is to collect and create a highlight reel of a whole year's wedding season. It’s not easy that’s for sure, so many amazing moments shared with amazing people, I could have easily created a 15 minute slideshow, probably longer. However after many hours and some hard decisions I’ve condensed my entire year in to just five minutes, and what a year it’s been!
It’s been a diverse, interesting and an exciting 52 weeks!!! Thank you to all my unbelievably wonderful couples entrusting us and for making this a year to remember, I’ve experienced such warmth, kindness and love from you all. I hope the memories we created together last a lifetime and generations to come.
This time of year is the wedding off-season which makes it the perfect time to dig deep into inspiration, set actionable goals and get excited about the upcoming year and wedding season. I’ve found that taking this time out to breathe, sets me up for more purposeful work… going into a new year with clearer vision and fresh inspiration to start (and finish) 2018 stronger!
So here’s the slideshow, I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed photographing and compiling all these fantastic moments.

NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER
2016 UK Coach Rally Coach Driver of the Year Russell Cooper from Sheffield, planned with his fiancée Klair, their dream destination wedding in Malta.
Klair & Russell met each other through work links to coaches, and they both wanted to incorporate Russell's work and passion for coaches into their destination wedding with two stunningly beautiful Maltese vintage buses.
Klair & Russell's civil ceremony and reception was at the Seabank in Mellieha which is all-inclusive hotel and spa. I've photographed many destination weddings there and they are great for families with young children. It's got everything under one roof, has 3 pools, adults pool, children's pool and a main pool. There's also the biggest beach on it's doorstep in Mellieha bay which is a very safe shallow swimming area.
Russell and Klair booked 2 vintage buses to take their wedding guests off between the ceremony and reception to explore the surrounding area around Mellieha. Every wedding I've been to in Malta that do hire these vintage buses, I find all the guests love them and it's such a great memory to have of the day.
Here are a few of the highlights of Klair & Russell's special Mediterranean destination wedding.
